Slash, spin and close! The butterfly knife is an
interesting knife that you can spin and swirl in your
hand, opening and closing the blade with each
revolution. It was kind of fad amongst martial artists
and teenagers during the 1980's. It has been legally
banned in many states due to their conceivability.
The Balisong or Butterfly Knife originated in the
Philippines tracing back to the little town of Balisong.
This knife is an integral part of urban legend and
flourished as a part of the culture of the time and
place. The Balisong was such a hit with the American
soldiers stationed in the Philippines during World War
II; they brought them along when they returned home. It
was nicknamed the Butterfly Knife by those soldiers and
both terms are used interchangeably today.
The Balisong or Butterfly Knife is a form of folding pocket knife with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang. It is an ingenious design that, when closed, has a blade that is completely covered. When a well-made Balisong is open and the two handles are locked together, it is as strong and reliable as a fixed blade knife.
